Project - Auto calculation won't turn off

Asked By DJ on 02-Mar-07 11:25 AM
I'm having a very frustrating time with Project. Even though I purchased it
in the US from a US company the validation software won't let me contact
support, so I'm hoping someone here can assist me.

I have gone into the options tab and set the calculation to manual, but the
software continues to try and calculate every 5 seconds (or maybe less, it
seems constant). Is there somewhere else I should be disabling it? It makes
it really really tough to work when it constantly refreshes. I reverified
that I had set it to manual, but it still flashes and periodically I even see
the "calculate" indicator flash on the bottom of the screen.

Hi DJC,

Well, I'm a bit stumped as to why you want to turn calculation off . Is
there a problem with a project file you are attempting to solve?

The reason is the constant calculation. It's a construction project file and
only has 100 lines or so. It is even working of the MS template. It's
constantly calculating though and this creates a constant stream of "blips".
Very annoying. but that's not the point. I should still be able to turn off
calculation.

Thanks for the additional information.

I'm not sure what you are referring to with the comments about

With calculation set to manual in both Project 2003 and Project 2007 if
I change task duration, add or subtract resources, the gantt bars do
update, the dates are not recalculated until I manually calculate the
project. If it is the gantt chart re-drawing what you are finding
distracting, you could work in a view which does not display the
graphic -- such as the Task Sheet.

I also suggest if you are using Project 2003 you verify you have the
latest update (Service Pack 2) installed.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

The blips may be the gant charts redrawing. It's some form of refresh. It
seems to be constant though, even if I'm not doing anything it
flickers/blips/refreshes. It's kind of annoying if you're scrolling down and
it throws you back to the highlighted task.

I am running w/ SP2.

I'm seeing almost constant calculates even with the Task Sheet View. I just
don't get why.

Hi DJC,

I'm sorry -- I can't reproduce what you are seeing. When my calculation
mode is set to manual and I am looking at the Task Sheet view -- I am
not seeing any flickers/blips/refreshes.

Is this occuring on all project files or just one? Is the refresh
occuring in other programs (excel for example)?
