Project - Gantt chart bar colour by resource

Asked By KevinRBarnet on 11-Oct-07 05:29 PM
Is it possible to colour code a Gantt chart bar based on the resource
assigned with manual intervention?

I have a client that wants to colour code the the Gantt bars for all the
tasks assigned to Bob Smith for a number of associated project files. I
thought that I could accomplish this task with some VBA code but have not
found a solution yet to satisfy my client.

Using MS Project 2003 Standard SP 2 on Windows XP Professional XP2.

Hello Kevin,

Yes it is possible.

You would need to create a formula in one of the custom Flag fields and
then format the bar styles to color the bars. FAQ #31 "Customizing Task
Bars" gives a great overview. See FAQ #31 at
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Use a spare Flag field with a formula which turns "yes" for Tasks which have
Bob as the Resource
eg: iif([Resource Name] = "Bob Smith", yes,no)
This will be a bit trickier if Bob is not the only Resource assigned to the
Tasks or if Bob is assigned at anything other than 100%.
Then use Format Bar Styles to include a row for the criteria,
eg:
Normal, Flag1
Critical, Flag1

For good housekeeping, this formatting change is best done with a new
special View, other than the default Gantt Chart which should be kept as
original.
